Views to subscriber ratio: what 360 channels show

We tested the popular views-to-subscriber "healthy ratio" bands against 360 real channels. The band page one calls healthy holds 15.6% of them.

There is no healthy views-to-subscriber ratio. We tested the bands that page one calls healthy against 360 real YouTube channels: the widely-published 5 to 20% band contains 15.6% of them, and the band those same pages call excellent, above 20%, contains 63%. A rule that labels almost two thirds of ordinary channels excellent is not measuring anything.

That matters because these bands are everywhere, and none of the pages publishing them shows a dataset.

The bands, and how many channels actually fall in them

Search for a views-to-subscriber benchmark and you get a tidy table. The page ranking first for that query publishes 1 to 5% as low, 5 to 10% as average, 10 to 20% as strong and 20%+ as excellent, and calls 5 to 20% the healthy range. Other pages on the same results page cluster around 8 to 14%. A separate set of guides quote lifetime ratios instead: "about 10 views per subscriber", or "one subscriber per 50 to 100 views".

We ran every one of them against our audit corpus. Here is what share of real channels falls inside each:

Read the fourth row again. Nearly two thirds of these channels clear the bar the internet reserves for exceptional performance, while 21% sit below the bottom of the healthy band entirely. The bands are not describing channel health. They are describing a distribution somebody guessed at.

If you have been measuring yourself against any of them and concluding something is broken, the rule is the more likely problem.

Our numbers and theirs are not measuring the same thing

Worth stating before anyone checks our working. We compute lifetime views divided by lifetime upload count, divided by subscribers, because public channel data is what we hold for all 360 channels. Most of the pages above mean views on a typical recent video, which is a different and generally smaller number for any channel with a long back catalogue.

That definitional gap cuts against us, not for us: measured their way, our median would fall, which would put even more channels below the healthy band rather than above it. The headline stands either way, because the headline is about spread.

What the real distribution looks like

The median channel gets about half its subscriber count as views on a typical video. The top 5% get more than eleven times their subscriber count. The bottom 5% get almost nothing. That is not a distribution you can compress into one number, and the honest summary is that "normal" covers about four orders of magnitude.

Lifetime views per subscriber tells the same story: the median is 192, the 90th percentile is 1,401, and the 95th is 2,355.

Why the ratio is so unstable

Two channels with 10,000 subscribers can sit at opposite ends of that table for reasons that have nothing to do with content quality.

Shorts change the maths completely. A Short can reach far outside your subscriber base, so a channel leaning on Shorts accumulates views that never convert to subscribers. Its ratio looks spectacular and its subscriber growth looks flat. A long-form channel with a loyal audience shows the reverse.

Back catalogue drags the average. Views per video is total views divided by total uploads. A channel with 1,200 uploads carries years of old videos in that denominator. A channel with 80 uploads does not. Same performance today, very different ratio.

Subscribers are sticky and views are not. Subscriber counts only go up in practice. If a channel had a strong period two years ago and slowed down, the subscriber count keeps that history while recent views do not.

So the ratio is measuring your channel's history and format mix at least as much as its current health.

What to measure instead

The useful comparison is your channel against itself, over time, on metrics tied to a single video's performance rather than to a lifetime total.

  1. Views on your last 10 uploads, not your lifetime average. Lifetime numbers are dominated by whatever you were doing years ago. Ten recent videos tell you what is true now.
  2. Viewed vs swiped away, for Shorts. This is in YouTube Studio per video. It measures whether people chose to watch when your Short appeared, which is the gate that decides whether distribution continues. A weak number here is a cover and first-line problem, and it is worth reading what viewed vs swiped away actually means before acting on it.
  3. Whether views concentrate or spread. If one video in ten carries most of your views, you have a hit-driven channel and your median is meaningless. If all ten land in a narrow band, you have a ceiling, which is a different problem with a different fix.
  4. Subscribers gained per video, not total subscribers. This is the number the ratio is really trying to approximate, and Studio reports it directly.

What we can and cannot claim from this data

The corpus is 360 public YouTube channels between 1,030 and 75,200 subscribers, captured from the public YouTube Data API, using subscriber count, video count and lifetime view count. Every figure above is reproducible from that data by the analysis script we keep in our repository, scripts/analyzeAuditCorpus.ts.

The limits are real and worth stating plainly:

None of that changes the headline, because the headline is about spread rather than about any single number. A rule that fits 9% of channels is not a rule.

The practical takeaway

If you came here to find out whether your ratio is bad, the answer is that the ratio cannot tell you. What can tell you is the shape of your last ten videos: where viewers leave, whether one topic carries everything, and whether your covers are losing people before the video ever gets a chance.

That is a per-video question, and the fastest way to answer it is to look at a specific video that underperformed rather than at a channel-wide average.
